How to plan the runway
- 1Mark your 18th birthday as the deadline and count backward.
- 2List the long-lead items — time-based merit badges, Life/position tenure, the project, the application, references.
- 3Start the slow merit badges now — the ones with weeks or seasons of logging.
- 4Begin the project early — choosing and getting the proposal approved takes time before any work starts.
- 5Track tenure — log your Life-active months and position-of-responsibility months.
- 6Leave slack — for approval delays, counselor schedules, and rewrites.
- 7Aim to finish months early, not days — then schedule the board of review.
The long-lead items
- Time-based merit badges — some involve weeks of tracking or full seasons; start them long before the final year.
- Tenure — about 6 months active as Life and about 6 months in a position of responsibility can't be compressed.
- The project — the proposal must be approved before any work, then planned, executed, and reported — realistically several months.
- Application and references — these take weeks to request and collect.
Notes & integrity
- The before-18 rule is firm. Missing it generally ends the Eagle path (extensions are rare and must be approved — see the Guide to Advancement).
- Don't cut the project or approvals short to beat the clock. Approvals must come before work (including fundraising); rushing invites rework and integrity problems.
- Requirements are fixed — planning doesn't change them; you can't compress tenure or skip approvals.

- Plan backward from 18. The birthday is a wall, so schedule everything to land before it, with margin.
- The slow badges bite last. The ones that need weeks or seasons of logging are what trap scouts who start late.
