When Not to Build

Pioneering structures hold people and loads, so load safety is not optional — and the most important pioneering skill is often knowing when NOT to build. Design to the safe working load, never the breaking point. Inspect and test before anyone uses it. And when in doubt, don't.

Read this first

  • This is life-safety judgment. Confirm all limits — height, load, supervision, weather — against the current Guide to Safe Scouting and the Pioneering merit badge before relying on any structure. This page is the "load safety and when not to build" reference the other pioneering pages point to.

The safety process

  1. 1Ask "should we build this?" first — skill, materials, anchors, supervision, site, weather. Any "no" → don't build.
  2. 2Design to safe working loads — rope, spars, and anchors all rated above the real load.
  3. 3Assign a safety officer — one experienced person whose whole job is watching for trouble.
  4. 4Build with sound materials — the specified rope and spar sizes; no weaker substitutes.
  5. 5Inspect completely — every lashing tight, every anchor solid, before anyone gets on.
  6. 6Test under control — a careful test climb or crossing while the crew observes.
  7. 7Limit and announce the load — one at a time on a bridge; a set, announced maximum on a platform — and enforce it.

When NOT to build

  • Beyond the crew's skill or without experienced adult supervision.
  • Wet or rainy conditions — ropes, spars, and footing get slippery, and wet knots can slip.
  • You'd have to substitute weaker rope or spars than the design specifies.
  • You can't anchor it properly or can't test it safely.
  • The site is hazardous — deep or moving water, hard or rocky landings, crowds — beyond the plan.

Common mistakes & safety

  • "When in doubt, don't build it" — the single most important pioneering-safety idea; a structure beyond the team's skill, materials, or supervision should not be attempted.
  • Anchors and lashings are the usual failure points — inspect them, tighten them, and rate the anchor for the multiplied load (tensioning and block-and-tackle increase anchor forces).
  • Wet weather stops the build — slippery spars and footing, and knots that slip when wet, make a wet build dangerous.
  • Never substitute weaker materials — the design's rope and spar sizes are chosen for the load; a lesser rope or a rotten spar fails.
  • Limit and enforce the number of people — one at a time on a bridge; a pre-set announced maximum on a platform; more people means more load and more sway.
  • Test before you trust it — the first person on an untested structure should be a careful, spotted test, not a scout mid-crossing.

Going deeper

  • The best pioneers know when to stop. Skill is impressive; judgment is what keeps people safe — plenty of good ideas should not be built with the crew, gear, or conditions at hand.
  • Dry days only. Wet rope, wet spars, and wet knots turn a sound plan into a hazard — postpone rather than risk it.
  • One at a time, and only after the test. The two rules that prevent most pioneering injuries: limit the load, and never let the first "test" be someone actually using it.
