How to find north at night
- 1Find the Big Dipper — the bright saucepan/plough shape, usually easy to spot in the north.
- 2Identify the pointer stars — the two outer stars of the Dipper's bowl (Dubhe and Merak).
- 3Extend the line about 5× — from Merak through Dubhe, roughly five times their gap, to a lone medium-bright star: Polaris.
- 4Confirm with the Little Dipper — Polaris is the end of its handle.
- 5Or use Cassiopeia — the W/M shape on the opposite side of Polaris, when the Dipper is hidden.
- 6Face Polaris = face north — behind you is south, right is east, left is west.
- 7Cross-check with a compass by day or dusk — stars confirm a bearing but don't replace a map and compass.
When to use it
- Night orientation without a compass — finding north from Polaris.
- Astronomy and Orienteering merit badges, stargazing, and enjoying the night sky.
- A backup direction-finder if a compass fails.
Common mistakes & safety
- Knowing north doesn't make night travel safe. The buddy system, a light, and a plan still apply — don't night-hike carelessly just because you're oriented.
- Don't rely on stars alone. Clouds hide them, and they give direction, not a route — carry and know how to use a map and compass.
- If you're lost, usually stay put at night. Use Polaris to keep oriented, but moving in the dark is risky — stop, stay warm, and wait for daylight.
- Polaris is not the brightest star — a common myth. It's only medium-bright; its value is that it stays fixed over north.
- Preserve night vision and dark skies — use a red light, keep noise down, don't sweep lights around (courtesy and wildlife).

- Pointer stars → 5× → Polaris. The whole trick in one line: the two outer bowl stars of the Big Dipper aim at the North Star, about five gaps away.
- Cassiopeia is the Dipper's backup. When the Big Dipper is low or hidden, the W/M of Cassiopeia on the other side of Polaris still points you home.
- Southern Hemisphere is different. There's no bright pole star — navigators use the Southern Cross to find south instead.
