How to read a watershed
- 1Identify the watershed — trace the high ground around a stream; everything inside drains to it.
- 2Observe the water — clarity (turbidity), temperature, smell, and signs of life or algae.
- 3Test indicators (with guidance) — physical (temp, turbidity), chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen), biological (sample macroinvertebrates).
- 4Read the macroinvertebrates — sensitive species (mayfly, stonefly, caddisfly) = healthy; only tolerant species = degraded.
- 5Look for pollution sources — an outfall (point source) vs. runoff from the land (nonpoint).
- 6Protect it in camp — waste, soap, and dishwater 200 ft from water; no pollution; minimize erosion.
- 7Do a conservation project — stream cleanup, erosion control, or monitoring.
The three indicator types
- Physical: temperature (drives oxygen levels) and turbidity (cloudiness from suspended soil — high turbidity signals erosion).
- Chemical: pH, dissolved oxygen (critical for aquatic animals), and nitrates/phosphates (excess = nutrient pollution).
- Biological: benthic macroinvertebrates — bottom-dwellers whose community reflects water quality over time; sensitive species indicate clean water.
Common mistakes & safety
- Treat all backcountry water. A clean-looking watershed can still be contaminated by upstream animals, waste, and runoff — always boil, filter, or chemically treat before drinking.
- Keep waste and soap 200 ft from water. The biggest thing a scout controls — human waste, greywater, and soap pollute the watershed and sicken people downstream.
- Prevent erosion. Trampling banks and cutting trails adds soil to streams — stay on durable surfaces and don't camp on fragile banks.
- Be careful around and in water — slippery banks, current, and cold; apply water-safety rules when sampling.
- Wash hands after handling stream water or organisms — waterborne germs; don't handle animals unnecessarily.
