How to measure distance
- 1Find the scale — the ratio (1:24,000) and/or the printed scale bar, usually at the map's edge.
- 2For a straight line, lay a ruler or the edge of paper between the two points, mark the length, and compare it to the scale bar.
- 3For a winding route, lay a piece of string along the path following every bend, mark the total, straighten it, and measure against the scale bar.
- 4Convert with the ratio if there's no scale bar — measure the map inches and multiply by the scale.
- 5Add for terrain — a route that climbs and drops is longer on the ground than on the flat map; budget extra distance and time.
- 6Sanity-check against known references (a mile of trail, the distance between two landmarks) so a scale mistake doesn't go unnoticed.
When to use it
- Trip planning — how far is the hike, and can you cover it in the daylight you have?
- Estimating time (distance + terrain + pace) to a campsite or water source.
- Orienteering, where measuring leg distances accurately is part of the sport.
Common mistakes & safety
- Underestimating distance is dangerous. Misjudging how far it is to water, camp, or the trailhead can leave a group out after dark — measure, don't eyeball.
- Flat map distance is a minimum, not the real number. Hills, switchbacks, and obstacles all add to it — plan for more distance and time than the straight-line reading.
- Match the scale to the trip. Too small a scale (like 1:250,000) hides the detail you need on foot — carry a large-scale map for hiking.
- Combine distance with pace and terrain to estimate time — "it's 4 miles" isn't enough without knowing how fast you travel over that ground.
- Double-check the units. A scale-reading slip (feet vs. miles) can double or halve your estimate — sanity-check it.

- Bar scale vs. ratio scale. The ratio (1:24,000) works in any unit and never lies; a bar (graphic) scale is faster in the field and stays correct even if the map is photocopied at a different size.
- The string trick. A ruler only measures straight lines, so string (or the edge of paper "walked" around the bends) captures the real, winding distance of a trail.
- A field rule of thumb. On the common 1:24,000 USGS quad, roughly 2.6 inches on the map equals about a mile.
